Part of the 30-Day Wig Mastery Journey | Ask Barb | Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge Jackson, MS

Your hair is only as good as its install, and your install is only as good as the communication between you and your stylist. Walking into an appointment without knowing what to ask is like walking into a restaurant without reading the menu you might end up with something you did not want, and you will not realize it until it is too late to change.
At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi, we encourage our clients to ask questions. The more you communicate, the better your results. Whether this is your first wig install, your first sew-in, or your first time at a new salon, these are the questions you need to ask before, during, and after your appointment.
QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
1. WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Some salons require you to bring your own hair (bundles, closure, or frontal). Others sell hair in-house or include it in the service price. At Vanity Xtreme, we offer both options you can purchase from ourXtremely Raw or Xtremely Affordable collections, or you can bring hair you have already purchased. Browse our full shop.
If you are bringing your own hair, ask if there is anything specific you need to do to prepare it beforehand. Some stylists prefer the hair to be pre-washed, while others want it fresh out of the package.
2. HOW LONG WILL THE APPOINTMENT TAKE?
A full wig installation or sew-in typically takes 2-4 hours depending on the complexity. Frontal installations and custom coloring add time. Knowing the expected duration helps you plan your day and avoids the frustration of rushing through the final steps.
3. DO I NEED A CONSULTATION FIRST?
For first-time clients, a consultation even a brief one makes a significant difference. It gives your stylist a chance to assess your natural hair, discuss your desired look, and recommend the right products and techniques. Many miscommunications happen when clients skip the consultation and jump straight into the install.
QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING THE INSTALL
4. WHAT BRAID PATTERN ARE YOU USING AND WHY?
If you are getting a sew-in, the braid pattern is the foundation of the entire install. Different patterns allow for different part placements and ponytail options. Ask your stylist to explain the pattern they are using and why it is the best choice for your desired style. For more about sew-in techniques, review our step-by-step sew-in guide.
5. HOW ARE YOU SECURING THE CLOSURE OR FRONTAL?
Closures and frontals can be sewn down, glued, or applied with both methods. Each technique has pros and cons. Sewing is more gentle on the hairline but may not lay as flat. Glue creates a seamless melt but can cause irritation or tension if not applied correctly. Ask your stylist which method they recommend for your hair type and lifestyle.
6. CAN I SEE THE HAIRLINE BEFORE YOU FINISH?
Do not be afraid to ask for a mirror check during the install. Once the lace is cut and the hairline is set, it is much harder to make adjustments. Asking to see the hairline placement, part width, and baby hair design during the process rather than after gives you the chance to provide feedback in real time.
7. IS THIS TENSION NORMAL?
Your install should feel snug but never painful. If you feel pulling, tightness, or discomfort at any point during the braiding or sewing process, speak up immediately. Excessive tension is the leading cause of traction alopecia gradual hair loss caused by repeated pulling on the hair follicles. A good stylist will adjust their technique without hesitation.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AFTER THE INSTALL
8. HOW DO I MAINTAIN THIS STYLE AT HOME?
Every install has specific care requirements. Ask your stylist for a detailed maintenance routine including how often to wash, what products to use, and how to sleep without disturbing the install. The maintenance routine for a sew-in is different from the routine for a glueless wig, so make sure the instructions are specific to your installation method.
9. WHEN SHOULD I COME BACK FOR MAINTENANCE?
Frontals and closures may need edge reapplication or tightening after a few weeks. Sew-ins need to be removed after 6-8 weeks to prevent matting and buildup. Knowing your maintenance schedule upfront allows you to budget both time and money. Our frontal maintenance schedule gives you a complete timeline for frontal-specific care.
10. CAN I REUSE THIS HAIR?
This is a question many first-time clients forget to ask. The answer depends on the quality of the hair and how it was installed. Hair from our Xtremely Raw collection (single-donor, 3+ years lifespan) is absolutely designed to be reused across multiple installations. Our Xtremely Affordable virgin hair (up to 1 year lifespan) can also be reused for shorter periods.
Quick weave hair can be reused as well. At Vanity Xtreme, we charge a cleaning fee to properly wash, sanitize, and restore the hair between quick weave installations. This makes quick weaves an even more cost-effective styling option.
11. WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I AVOID?
Some products can damage your install or shorten the life of your hair. Heavy oils can cause buildup on your lace. Products containing alcohol can dry out the hair. Sulfate-heavy shampoos can strip moisture. Ask your stylist for a list of recommended and avoided products specific to your hair type and installation.
THE REFERENCE PHOTO RULE
If we could give first-time clients only one piece of advice, it would be this: bring reference photos. Words like "natural-looking" and "a little bit of layers" mean different things to different people. A photo eliminates ambiguity. Bring at least 3-5 photos that show the length, color, density, texture, and styling you want. Include photos of what you do not want as well sometimes knowing what to avoid is just as helpful for your stylist.
If you are still deciding what questions to bring, our beginner's checklist gives you a comprehensive framework for your entire wig journey. And understanding the difference between closures and frontals will help you have a more informed conversation with your stylist about your desired look.
