A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO YOUR FIRST SEW-IN INSTALLATION
A sew-in weave is one of the most protective and versatile ways to wear extensions. Unlike a wig that can be removed daily, a sew-in is installed directly onto your braided natural hair and stays in place for weeks. The result is a secure, natural-looking style that moves and falls like the hair is growing from your scalp.
If you have never had a sew-in before, the process can feel mysterious. At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi, we specialize in sew-in installations and want you to know exactly what to expect from the moment you sit down in the chair to the moment you walk out the door.
BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT: PREPARATION
Great installs start before you arrive at the salon. Here is what you should do in the days leading up to your appointment:
Wash and deep condition your natural hair. Your natural hair will be braided down and hidden for several weeks. Starting with clean, well-moisturized hair protects your strands while they are tucked away.
Choose your hair. You will need bundles (usually 2-4 depending on desired fullness) and a closure or frontal. If you are unsure how many bundles you need, our guide on layering hair bundles breaks down how to combine different lengths for a natural, layered look.
Communicate with your stylist. Bring reference photos. Know your desired length, texture, and parting style. Our guide on what to ask your wig stylist gives you a complete list of questions to bring to your consultation.
STEP 1: THE BRAID-DOWN
The braid-down is the foundation of your entire sew-in. Your stylist will cornrow your natural hair flat against your scalp in a pattern designed for your specific installation. The braid pattern matters because it determines how flat the install will lay and how naturally the hair will fall.
Common braid patterns include:
Straight-back braidsthe simplest pattern, great for middle-part styles
Vixen braidsa four-section pattern that allows you to pull hair into a ponytail
Beehive braidsa circular pattern that creates a smooth, flat foundation
Your stylist will choose the pattern based on your desired look and your natural hair's thickness and length. A net or stocking cap may be applied over the braids for additional security.
STEP 2: INSTALLING THE CLOSURE OR FRONTAL
If you are using a closure or frontal, it will be installed first. The closure is typically sewn down at the top of the head where your part will be. A frontal is attached along the entire front hairline. The lace is customized bleached knots, plucked hairline, and cut to fit your head perfectly.
This is the step that determines how natural your hairline looks. Proper closure and frontal installation is a skill that separates average installs from flawless ones. At Vanity Xtreme, our stylists are trained specifically in lace customization and seamless frontal applications.
STEP 3: SEWING IN THE BUNDLES
With the braid-down secure and the closure or frontal in place, your stylist will begin sewing the weft tracks onto the braids using a curved needle and weaving thread. The bundles are sewn in from the nape of the neck upward, with shorter bundles at the top and longer bundles at the bottom to create natural layering.
Each track is sewn tightly enough to stay secure but not so tight that it causes tension on your natural hair. If you feel pain during this step, speak up immediately. A properly installed sew-in should feel snug but comfortable. For guidance on how to combine bundle lengths, check our guide on how to pick hair length.
STEP 4: THE CUT AND STYLE
Once all the tracks are sewn in and the closure or frontal is blended, your stylist will cut and style the hair to create your desired look. This is where the install comes to life. Layering, face-framing, and blending the closure or frontal with the bundles are all part of this finishing step.
Your stylist may flat iron the hair for a sleek look, curl it for volume, or leave it in its natural texture. This is the time to speak up if you want adjustments it is much easier to customize during the initial appointment than to come back later.
STEP 5: AFTERCARE AND MAINTENANCE
A sew-in typically lasts 6 to 8 weeks with proper care. Here is how to keep it looking fresh:
Wash your hair every 1-2 weeks. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and focus on cleansing the scalp between the braids. Dilute the shampoo with water for easier application.
Moisturize your natural hair. Use a lightweight oil or leave-in conditioner on your braids to keep your natural hair hydrated underneath the install.
Sleep with a satin bonnet or pillowcase. This reduces friction and prevents frizz and tangling.
Avoid excessive heat. While human hair extensions can handle heat, frequent heat styling will shorten the lifespan of your bundles.
Do not leave your sew-in in longer than 8 weeks. Extended wear can lead to matting, buildup, and tension on your natural hair.
When it is time for removal, have your stylist take it out professionally. Cutting the thread yourself without seeing the braids underneath can result in accidentally cutting your natural hair.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT HAIR FOR YOUR SEW-IN
The hair you choose directly impacts how long your sew-in lasts and how it looks over time. Our Xtremely Affordable virgin hair is perfect for clients who want a beautiful sew-in that lasts the full 6-8 week install and can potentially be reused for one or two more installs.
For clients who want to reuse their bundles across multiple sew-ins over the course of a year or more, our Xtremely Raw single-donor hair is the superior choice. See sew-in combo packages that bundle hair + install together. Because the cuticles are fully aligned and intact, Xtremely Raw hair resists tangling, maintains its texture through multiple washes, and lasts three or more years with proper care.
And remember hair used for a quick weave installation can be reused at Vanity Xtreme. We offer acleaning fee service to properly sanitize and prep the hair for your next install. When you store your units properly between installs, you maximize your investment. Learn how in our guide on how to store wigs.
