YOUR FIRST WIG: THE ULTIMATE BEGINNER'S CHECKLIST
Buying your first wig can feel like learning a new language. Lace types, densities, cap constructions, hair origins the terminology alone is enough to make your head spin. But here is the truth: every confident wig wearer you admire started exactly where you are right now. They just had the right information at the right time.
At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi, we walk first-time clients through this process every single day. This checklist is the same framework we use in our consultations. Print it, screenshot it, and bring it with you when you shop.
STEP 1: DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET AND LONGEVITY GOALS
Before you look at a single bundle or unit, ask yourself two questions: How much can I invest right now, and how long do I want this hair to last?
If you want hair that lasts up to one year with proper care, our Xtremely Affordable line is an excellent starting point. It is 100% virgin human hair that holds curl, accepts color, and gives you a beautiful, natural look without a premium price tag.
If you are looking for a long-term investment hair that can last three years or more ourXtremely Raw collection is single-donor hair with fully aligned cuticles. This is the hair that gets better with every wash. Learn more about raw hair vs. virgin hair to understand why the sourcing method matters so much.
STEP 2: CHOOSE YOUR LACE TYPE
Your lace is the foundation of a natural-looking install. There are two primary decisions here: the construction (closure vs. frontal) and the material (HD lace vs. transparent lace).
A closure gives you a fixed parting space and is ideal for beginners who want a low-maintenance, protective style. A frontalcovers your entire hairline from ear to ear and gives you maximum styling freedom but it requires more maintenance and skill to install. Read our full breakdown oflace closures vs. frontals to decide which is right for your lifestyle.
For the lace material itself, HD lace is thinner and virtually disappears against the skin. Transparent lace is slightly thicker but more durable. Both can look incredible when melted properly.
STEP 3: SELECT YOUR LENGTH AND TEXTURE
Length is about more than just inches. A 20-inch straight wig will hang very differently than a 20-inch deep wave wig because curl patterns eat up length. Our guide on how to pick hair length includes visual references so you can see exactly where each length falls on different body types.
For beginners, we typically recommend starting with a body wave or loose wave texture. These textures are versatile enough to be worn straight with a flat iron or curly with a flexi-rod set, giving you maximum looks from a single unit.
STEP 4: UNDERSTAND DENSITY
Density refers to how thick or full the wig appears. Most units come in 150% or 180% density. A 150% density looks natural and is easy to style. A 180% density gives you a fuller, more glamorous look but requires more thinning and layering during the customization process.
If you are unsure, 150% is the safest bet for a first-time wearer. You can always go fuller on your next unit once you understand what you like.
STEP 5: PLAN YOUR INSTALLATION
A beautiful wig is only as good as its install. Before your appointment, think about what you want to communicate to your stylist. Do you want a middle part or a side part? Do you want baby hairs? How much layering do you want?
Our guide on what to ask your wig stylist gives you a complete list of questions to bring to your consultation so nothing gets lost in translation.
STEP 6: KNOW HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR INVESTMENT
Your wig is an investment, and proper storage is the easiest way to protect it. Tossing your unit on the dresser or stuffing it in a drawer will shorten its lifespan dramatically. Learn the right way to maintain your unit between wears with our guide on how to store wigs.
For quick weave clients, keep in mind that hair used for a quick weave can be reused. At Vanity Xtreme, we charge a cleaning fee to properly sanitize and restore the hair so it is ready for your next install. This makes quick weaves an even more affordable option for clients who want to switch up their look frequently.
