Your Frontal Maintenance Schedule: A 3-Week Guide

Part of the 30-Day Wig Mastery Journey | Ask Barb | Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge Jackson, MS

YOUR FRONTAL MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE: A 3-WEEK GUIDE

A lace frontal install is an investment in money, in time, and in your confidence. When done properly, a frontal can last a full three weeks while looking freshly installed the entire time. But "done properly" does not just mean the initial installation. It means following a consistent maintenance routine at home between salon visits.

At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi, we give every frontal client a maintenance rundown before they leave the chair. This guide expands on that advice with a detailed, week-by-week schedule so you know exactly what to do and what to avoid during each phase of your frontal's life cycle.

Before diving

in, it helps to understand what type of lace you are working with. Our lace closure vs. frontal comparison explains the structural differences and how they affect maintenance needs.

WEEK 1: THE HANDS-OFF PHASE

The first week after installation is the most important and the easiest, because your primary job is toleave it alone.

DAYS 1 THROUGH 3

During the first 72 hours, the adhesive is still fully curing and bonding to your skin. Do not touch your hairline. Do not scratch your edges. Do not pull the lace to check if it is secure. Every time you tug on a freshly installed frontal, you weaken the bond and shorten the lifespan of the install.

NIGHTLY TIE-DOWN ROUTINE

Every single night during week one and every night thereafter wrap a satin scarf or tie-down band around your hairline before putting on your satin bonnet. The tie-down keeps the lace pressed flat against your skin overnight, preventing edges from lifting while you sleep. Think of it as a mini melt session that happens automatically while you rest.

WHAT TO AVOID IN WEEK 1

  • Heavy sweating (skip intense workouts for 48 hours if possible)

  • Steam from cooking or hot showers directly on the hairline

  • Oil-based products near the lace oils break down adhesive

  • Sleeping without your tie-down and bonnet

WEEK 2: THE TOUCH-UP PHASE

By the beginning of week two, you may start to notice minor changes. The edges of the lace might show the faintest hint of lifting, especially around the temples where sweat and natural oils accumulate. This is completely normal and easy to address.

EDGE TOUCH-UPS

If you notice lifting at the edges, do a targeted re-melt. Clean the affected area with rubbing alcohol, apply a small amount of adhesive, press the lace down with the tail of a rattail comb, hit it with medium heat from your blow dryer, and apply your melt band for 10 minutes. This takes less than 15 minutes and extends the life of your install significantly. For a complete walkthrough of this process, our how to melt your lace at home guide covers every step with product recommendations.

MID-INSTALL WASH

Around day 10, it is time to wash the hair (not the lace). Dilute sulfate-free shampoo in water and gently work it through the mid-lengths and ends, keeping the soapy water away from the hairline and adhesive. Rinse carefully, condition the ends, and let the hair air-dry or blow-dry on low heat. This removes product buildup, sweat, and environmental residue that can make the hair look dull.

CONTINUED NIGHTLY ROUTINE

Do not get lazy with your tie-down and bonnet routine in week two. The adhesive bond weakens slightly each day, so consistent overnight pressure is even more important now than it was in week one.

WEEK 3: THE ASSESSMENT AND REMOVAL PHASE

Week three is about extending the install as long as safely possible and then knowing when it is time to let go.

DAILY ASSESSMENT

Check your hairline every morning. If the lace is lifting in multiple areas despite touch-ups, if you notice significant adhesive buildup, or if your scalp feels itchy or irritated under the cap, these are signals that the install has reached the end of its safe lifespan. Pushing a frontal beyond three weeks increases the risk of traction damage to your edges and bacterial buildup under the lace.

SCHEDULE YOUR REMOVAL APPOINTMENT

Do not wait until the last minute. By the middle of week two, you should already have your removal and re-install appointment booked at Vanity Xtreme. This ensures you get your preferred time slot and avoids the temptation to leave the frontal in "just a few more days," which is how edge damage happens.

GENTLE REMOVAL

When it is time to remove, use a professional adhesive remover never just rip the lace off. Apply the remover along the hairline, let it sit for the time specified on the product label, and gently peel the lace away from front to back. If any section resists, apply more remover and wait. Forcing the lace off can tear the lace material and pull out your natural hair along the hairline. This is one of the mostcommon wig problems we see, and it is 100% preventable with patience.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR LACE TYPE

Your maintenance experience will vary slightly depending on whether you have HD lace or transparent lace. HD lace is thinner and more delicate, which means it melts beautifully but also lifts more easily in humidity and sweat. Transparent lace is slightly thicker and more durable, holding up better over three weeks but requiring more careful initial melting. Our HD vs. transparent lace comparison helps you understand which type you are working with and how to adjust your care routine accordingly.

THE GOLDEN RULE OF FRONTAL CARE

If there is one takeaway from this guide, it is this: consistency beats intensity. A little bit of maintenance every night the tie-down, the bonnet, keeping oils away from the hairline adds up to a frontal that looks fresh for the full three weeks. Skipping your nightly routine for even two or three days can undo a week's worth of careful care.
