What Lace Size Do I Need? A Deep Dive into 2x6, 5x5, & More

Part of the 30-Day Wig Mastery Journey | Ask Barb | Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge Jackson, MS

WHAT LACE SIZE DO I NEED? A DEEP DIVE INTO 2X6, 5X5, AND MORE

If you have ever shopped for a wig or closure online, you have seen the numbers: 2x6, 4x4, 5x5, 13x4, 13x6. They look like math equations, but they are actually the key to understanding how much parting freedom your unit will give you. Choose the wrong size, and you are locked into one look. Choose the right size, and your styling options open wide.

At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi, lace size is one of the first things we discuss during a consultation because it directly impacts how natural your install will look and how many ways you can wear it. Let us break down every common lace size so you can shop with confidence.

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY MEAN?

The numbers represent the dimensions of the lace piece in inches width by depth. A4x4 closure means the lace piece is 4 inches wide and 4 inches deep. A 13x6 frontal means the lace spans 13 inches across your hairline and extends 6 inches back from your forehead.

The width determines how far across your head the lace reaches. The depth determines how far back you can part your hair. More depth equals more parting room.

CLOSURES: 2X6, 4X4, 5X5, AND 6X6

THE 2X6 CLOSURE (KIM K CLOSURE)

This narrow closure is designed for a single, deep middle part. It gives you 6 inches of parting depth but only 2 inches of width, which means you are committed to a center part. This is a great option if you already know you love a middle part and want a slim, natural-looking parting space. It is also one of the most affordable closure options.

THE 4X4 CLOSURE

The 4x4 is the most popular closure size on the market. It gives you enough width for a middle part, a slight side part, or a free part within the 4-inch zone. For beginners, this is often the sweet spot enough versatility without the maintenance demands of a frontal. Learn more in our comparison oflace closures vs. frontals.

THE 5X5 CLOSURE

A 5x5 gives you one extra inch of width and depth compared to a 4x4. That extra inch makes a noticeable difference in how freely you can switch your part. If you like to alternate between a middle part and a deep side part, a 5x5 closure is the ideal upgrade. For a deeper look at what that extra space gives you, check out our guide on parting space explained.

THE 6X6 CLOSURE

The 6x6 closure is the largest standard closure size. It gives you significant parting room and a more natural-looking crown area. Some clients prefer this over a frontal because it offers similar versatility with less maintenance on the hairline.

FRONTALS: 13X4 AND 13X6

THE 13X4 FRONTAL

A 13x4 frontal spans your entire hairline from ear to ear (13 inches) and gives you 4 inches of parting depth. This is the standard frontal size. It allows you to part anywhere along your hairline, pull hair back into a low ponytail, and create the most natural-looking hairline possible. Frontals require more skilled installation and regular maintenance. Our frontal maintenance schedule outlines exactly how to keep your frontal looking fresh.

THE 13X6 FRONTAL

The 13x6 is the premium frontal option. Those extra 2 inches of depth give you significantly more parting room and a deeper, more natural-looking scalp illusion. If you want maximum styling freedom deep side parts, middle parts, slicked-back looks the 13x6 is unmatched. It is also the best option for clients who want to pull their hair up into a high ponytail without exposing tracks.

HOW TO DECIDE: CLOSURE VS. FRONTAL

Ask yourself these questions:

  • How often do I change my part? If you stick to one part, a closure is perfect. If you like to switch, go frontal.

  • How much maintenance am I willing to do? Closures are lower maintenance. Frontals need regular edge reapplication and careful handling.

  • Do I want to pull my hair up? Only a frontal gives you a seamless hairline all the way around.

  • What is my budget? Closures are more affordable. Frontals are a larger investment.

THE ROLE OF LACE MATERIAL

Lace size and lace material work together. A 13x6 frontal in HD lace will give you the most invisible, undetectable hairline possible. A 4x4 closure in transparent lace can still look incredible when properly melted. The lace material affects how well the lace blends with your skin tone. Explore the differences in our guide on HD vs. transparent lace.

OUR RECOMMENDATION FOR BEGINNERS

If this is your very first unit, we recommend starting with a 5x5 closure. It gives you enough parting freedom to experiment with different looks, it is easier to install and maintain than a frontal, and it is priced at a comfortable entry point. Once you are confident in your maintenance routine and ready for more versatility, upgrade to a 13x4 or 13x6 frontal.
