PARTING SPACE EXPLAINED: HOW MUCH ROOM DO YOU REALLY NEED?

You have probably heard the lace dimensions 2x6, 4x4, 5x5, 13x4, 13x6. But what do those numbers actually mean in terms of real-world styling? How does a 2x6 closure look compared to a 5x5? How much more freedom does a 13x6 frontal give you over a 13x4? Understanding parting space is the key to choosing a unit that matches how you actually want to wear your hair.

At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi, we break this down for our clients using a simple visual approach. Let us walk you through what each lace size actually gives you in terms of parting freedom.

UNDERSTANDING THE MEASUREMENTS

The numbers represent incheswidth x depth. Width runs from left to right across your head. Depth runs from front to back. The depth number tells you how far back from your hairline you can part your hair and still see realistic-looking scalp (the lace). Anything beyond the lace area will show the weft tracks or cap construction underneath.

To understand this in practical terms, hold a ruler to your head. Four inches of depth from your hairline takes you roughly to the crown area. Six inches of depth goes past the crown toward the middle of your head. Thirteen inches of width covers your entire hairline from ear to ear.

WHAT EACH LACE SIZE GIVES YOU

2X6: THE DEDICATED MIDDLE PART

A 2x6 closure sometimes called the Kim K closure gives you a narrow, 2-inch-wide parting channel that runs 6 inches back. This is designed exclusively for a clean, deep middle part. You cannot switch to a side part without exposing the edge of the lace. If you are a middle-part loyalist who never switches up, the 2x6 is a focused, affordable option. But if you like variety, this is too limiting.

4X4: THE STARTER ZONE

The 4x4 closure gives you a 4-inch-wide, 4-inch-deep square of lace at the top of your head. Within that zone, you can do a middle part, a slight side part, or a free part. You cannot do a deep side part because the lace does not extend far enough to the side. The 4x4 is the most common closure on the market and is a reliable, budget-friendly choice for everyday wear.

5X5: THE UPGRADE

That extra inch of width and depth over the 4x4 makes a meaningful difference. A 5x5 gives you noticeably more room to shift your part from center to side and back without worrying about the lace edge being visible. For clients who like to alternate between a middle part and a moderate side part, the 5x5 hits the sweet spot between versatility and affordability.

6X6: THE MAXIMUM CLOSURE

The 6x6 is the largest standard closure available. It gives you considerable parting freedom and a large area of realistic scalp illusion. Some clients choose a 6x6 over a frontal because it offers frontal-like versatility with closure-level maintenance. The tradeoff is that it still does not cover the hairline from ear to ear, so pulling the hair completely back into a ponytail will expose tracks on the sides.

13X4: THE STANDARD FRONTAL

A 13x4 frontal spans your entire hairline 13 inches from ear to ear with 4 inches of depth. This gives you a seamless, natural-looking hairline all the way around and allows you to part anywhere along the front of your head. You can do deep side parts, middle parts, and even pull the hair back into a low ponytail. The 4 inches of depth is enough for most styling needs.

13X6: THE PREMIUM FRONTAL

The 13x6 is the gold standard for styling freedom. Those extra 2 inches of depth compared to the 13x4 give you noticeably more room to pull the hair back, create deep parts, and achieve slicked-back styles without exposing any tracks. If you want maximum versatility including high ponytails and pulled-back looks the 13x6 is unmatched. For a detailed comparison of every size, see our guide onwhat lace size you need.

PARTING SPACE AND DAILY STYLING

Think about how you actually wear your hair on a daily basis. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I change my part often? If yes, you need at least a 5x5 closure or a frontal.

  • Do I pull my hair back? If yes, you need a frontal. Closures do not cover the hairline on the sides.

  • Do I mostly wear it down with a fixed part? A 4x4 or 5x5 closure is plenty.

  • Do I want a deep side part? A 5x5 can work for a moderate side part. For a truly deep side part, you need a frontal.

Most clients at Vanity Xtreme end up choosing between a 5x5 closure (for clients who want versatility with minimal maintenance) and a 13x6 frontal(for clients who want maximum styling freedom and are willing to maintain their hairline). Understanding the structural differences between closures and frontals beyond just the parting space is equally important ourlace closure vs. frontal guide covers that in depth.

HOW LACE MATERIAL AFFECTS PARTING

The lace material you choose affects how natural your parting space looks. HD lace creates the most realistic scalp illusion because of its ultra-thin, sheer construction. Transparent lace is slightly more visible but more durable. The larger your lace area, the more important the lace material becomes because there is more lace that needs to blend seamlessly with your skin.

For frontals (13x4 or 13x6), we generally recommend investing in HD lace because there is a large surface area of lace that needs to be invisible. For smaller closures (4x4 or 5x5), transparent lace can look just as good because there is less lace to hide. Read the full material comparison in our guide on HD vs. transparent lace.

THE MELTING FACTOR

No matter how much parting space you have, the lace has to melt properly for it to look natural. Melting is the process of adhering the lace flat against your skin so that the transition from lace to skin is seamless. Even the best 13x6 frontal will look unnatural if the lace is not properly melted.

Proper melting involves applying adhesive or got2b glue, laying the lace flat, and using a hot comb or flat iron wrapped in a cloth to seal the lace against the skin. The technique takes practice, but once you master it, your hairline will be undetectable regardless of your lace size. Our guide on how to melt lace at home walks you through the full process.

OUR FINAL RECOMMENDATION

If you are new to wigs and want a single recommendation: start with a 5x5 closure. It gives you enough versatility to experiment with different parts, it is easier to install and maintain than a frontal, and it is available at a comfortable price point in both our Xtremely Affordable virgin hair (up to 1 year) and our Xtremely Raw single-donor collection (3+ years).

Once you are comfortable with your maintenance routine and want more freedom, upgrade to a 13x6 frontal. The jump in styling versatility is significant, and you will never look back.
