Multi-donor hair is collected from multiple people and combined into a single bundle. This creates a fundamental problem that no amount of processing can fully fix.

THE SCIENCE OF CUTICLE ALIGNMENT

Every strand of human hair is covered in a layer of overlapping scales called the cuticle. Think of them like shingles on a roof they all point in the same direction, from root to tip. When hair is on your head, all the cuticles naturally point downward.

When single-donor hair is collected properly, the cuticles remain aligned. Every scale on every strand points the same way. This alignment is what prevents tangling. The strands slide smoothly past each other instead of catching and interlocking.

When hair from multiple donors is mixed together, the strands are oriented in different directions. Cuticles point up on some strands and down on others. When these opposing cuticle layers rub against each other, they catch like Velcro, creating tangles, mats, and knots.

To combat this, manufacturers of multi-donor hair often strip the cuticle layer using acid baths. They then coat the hair in silicone to simulate smoothness.
