DEEP CONDITIONING 101: REVIVING YOUR XTREMELY RAW TRESSES

One of the most beautiful things about raw human hair is that it responds to care the same way your natural hair does. Feed it moisture and protein, and it rewards you with softness, shine, and longevity. Neglect it, and even the highest quality hair will become dry, tangled, and dull. Deep conditioning is not optional it is the single most important maintenance step you can take to protect your investment.

At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi, we educate every client on proper hair care because we want your hair to last. Our Xtremely Raw single-donor hair is designed to last three or more years, but only if you treat it right. Here is your complete guide to deep conditioning.

WHY RAW HAIR NEEDS DEEP CONDITIONING

Raw hair is unprocessed human hair with its cuticle layer fully intact. This is what makes it so durable and natural-looking. But even with its cuticles aligned and healthy, raw hair is no longer receiving natural oils from a scalp. When hair is cut from the donor, it loses its connection to the sebaceous glands that keep it naturally moisturized.

This means you have to be the source of moisture. Deep conditioning replaces the oils and hydration that the hair can no longer produce on its own. Without it, the cuticle layer can dry out, lift, and begin to tangle. Understanding the difference between raw hair and virgin hair helps you appreciate why raw hair's intact cuticle structure makes it especially receptive to deep conditioning treatments.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DEEP CONDITION?

For most clients, we recommend deep conditioning every 7 to 14 days depending on your environment and styling habits:

  • Every 7 days if you use heat regularly, live in a dry climate, or swim frequently

  • Every 10-14 days if you air dry your hair, avoid heavy heat, and live in a moderate humidity environment

Jackson, Mississippi has humid summers, which can actually help keep your hair moisturized during the warmer months. However, air conditioning and indoor heating during other seasons can strip moisture quickly. Adjust your routine seasonally.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • A sulfate-free shampoo

  • A hydrating deep conditioner (look for ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, keratin, or coconut oil)

  • A wide-tooth comb or detangling brush

  • A plastic processing cap or plastic wrap

  • A source of heat (hooded dryer, steamer, or warm towel)

  • A microfiber towel or t-shirt for drying

STEP-BY-STEP DEEP CONDITIONING PROCESS

STEP 1: DETANGLE BEFORE WASHING

Before you wet your hair, gently detangle it with a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots. Never start at the top and pull down this creates unnecessary tension and can cause shedding. If your hair is installed on a wig or unit, detangle while it is on the wig head.

STEP 2: WASH WITH SULFATE-FREE SHAMPOO

Wet the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Apply a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo and gently work it through the hair in a downward motion, following the direction of the cuticles. Never scrub in circles or bunch the hair up this causes tangling. Rinse completely.

STEP 3: APPLY DEEP CONDITIONER GENEROUSLY

Section the hair into manageable portions. Apply the deep conditioner from mid-shaft to ends, which is where the hair needs the most moisture. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to distribute the product evenly. Do not apply heavy conditioner directly to the roots of a closure or frontal this can loosen the knots.

STEP 4: ADD HEAT FOR PENETRATION

Cover the hair with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer or hair steamer for 15-30 minutes. The heat opens the cuticle layer slightly, allowing the conditioning ingredients to penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. If you do not have a dryer, wrapping a warm damp towel around the plastic cap works as an alternative.

STEP 5: RINSE WITH COOL WATER

After the treatment time, rinse the conditioner out completely with cool water. Cool water seals the cuticle layer back down, locking in the moisture and creating a smooth, shiny finish. This step is crucial warm water rinses leave the cuticle open and can lead to frizz.

STEP 6: AIR DRY OR LOW-HEAT DRY

Gently squeeze excess water out with a microfiber towel. Never wring or twist the hair. Allow it to air dry on a wig stand or mannequin head, or use a blow dryer on a low-heat setting. Proper drying and storage techniques are covered in our guide on how to store wigs.

MOISTURE VS. PROTEIN: KNOWING WHAT YOUR HAIR NEEDS

Deep conditioners fall into two categories: moisture-based and protein-based. Your hair needs both, but not in equal amounts at all times.

Moisture conditioners add hydration. Use these when hair feels dry, straw-like, or rough. Most of your deep conditioning sessions should be moisture-focused.

Protein conditionersstrengthen the hair shaft. Use these when hair feels overly soft, mushy, or limp signs that it has too much moisture and not enough structure. A protein treatment once every 4-6 weeks is usually sufficient for raw hair.

The key is balance. Too much moisture without protein causes the hair to become weak and stretchy. Too much protein without moisture causes brittleness and breakage. This balance is what makes single-donor raw hairsuch a great investment its intact cuticle structure responds predictably to both types of treatment.

WHAT MAKES RAW HAIR DIFFERENT IN CONDITIONING

Because Xtremely Rawhair retains its full cuticle layer, it absorbs and holds conditioning treatments more effectively than processed hair. Each deep conditioning session genuinely improves the hair's quality. Over time, raw hair that is properly maintained actually gets softer and more manageable the opposite of processed hair, which degrades with each wash.

Our Xtremely Affordable virgin hair also benefits from deep conditioning, though its response will be slightly different since it has undergone minimal processing. For virgin hair lasting up to one year, regular conditioning helps maintain its quality throughout its intended lifespan. For your full starter toolkit, check out our wig starter kit guide.
