BEYOND INCHES: MATCHING HAIR TEXTURE TO YOUR DREAM LOOK
When most people shop for hair, the first thing they focus on is length. How many inches do I need? Will 22 inches reach my waist? But length is only half the equation. The texture you choose affects how the hair moves, how much volume it has, how long it appears, and how much maintenance it requires. Two women can buy the same 20-inch bundle in different textures and end up with completely different looks.
At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge in Jackson, Mississippi, texture selection is one of the most important conversations we have with our clients. The right texture transforms a good install into a head-turning one. Here is everything you need to know about matching texture to your vision.
HOW TEXTURE AFFECTS APPARENT LENGTH
This is the number one thing that surprises first-time buyers. Curl patterns eat up length. A 20-inch straight bundle will hang down to your mid-back. That same 20-inch bundle in a deep wave texture might only reach your bra strap because the curls compress the overall length.
Here is a general guide to how much length different textures consume:
Straightfull length, no shrinkage
Body Waveapproximately 1-2 inches of shrinkage
Loose Waveapproximately 2-3 inches of shrinkage
Deep Waveapproximately 3-4 inches of shrinkage
Curly / Kinky Curlyapproximately 4-6 inches of shrinkage
This means if you want deep wave hair that reaches your mid-back, you may need to order 22-24 inches to account for the curl pattern. Our guide on how to pick hair length includes visual references for each texture at various lengths.
TEXTURE BREAKDOWN: FINDING YOUR MATCH
STRAIGHT TEXTURE
Straight hair is sleek, polished, and low-maintenance in terms of daily styling. It shows the most length and has the most movement. Straight texture is ideal for clients who want a clean, sophisticated look or who plan to curl their hair themselves and want a blank canvas. The downside is that straight hair shows oiliness faster and can look flat without layering.
BODY WAVE TEXTURE
Body wave is the most versatile texture on the market. It has a gentle, loose "S" pattern that adds volume and movement without being overtly curly. Body wave can be flat ironed straight or curled tighter depending on your mood. If you are unsure which texture to choose, body wave is almost always the safest starting point. It blends easily with most natural hair textures and looks good at every length.
LOOSE WAVE TEXTURE
Loose wave has a slightly more defined wave pattern than body wave. It offers more volume and a more relaxed, beachy look. This texture is perfect for clients who want effortless, lived-in waves without having to use a curling wand every morning.
DEEP WAVE TEXTURE
Deep wave has tight, defined waves that create significant volume and fullness. This is the texture that turns heads. It looks luxurious and glamorous, but it does require more maintenance deep wave hair is more prone to tangling if not properly cared for. Regular deep conditioning is essential. Our guide ondeep conditioning raw hair will show you how to keep those waves defined and frizz-free.
CURLY AND KINKY CURLY TEXTURES
Curly and kinky curly textures offer the most volume and the most natural look for clients with type 3 and type 4 natural hair. These textures blend seamlessly with afro-textured hair and create beautiful, full styles. They also have the most shrinkage, so ordering longer lengths is essential.
MATCHING TEXTURE TO YOUR LIFESTYLE
Your texture choice should match not just your desired look but also the amount of time you are willing to spend on maintenance:
Low maintenance:Straight or body wave wash, condition, air dry, go
Moderate maintenance:Loose wave or deep wave requires regular conditioning and gentle detangling
Higher maintenance:Curly and kinky curly needs consistent moisture, careful handling, and defined styling routines
HOW TEXTURE WORKS WITH LAYERING
Layering bundles of different lengths creates a natural, graduated look. The way layers fall is directly affected by texture. Straight layers create a sharp, defined graduation. Wavy and curly layers blend together for a softer, more voluminous effect. Understanding how texture interacts with layering helps you plan your bundle order more effectively. Our guide on layering hair bundles dives deep into how to combine different lengths for your perfect look.
CAN YOU CHANGE THE TEXTURE?
Yes if you are working with 100% human hair. OurXtremely Affordable virgin hair and Xtremely Raw single-donor hair can both be heat-styled to change texture temporarily. You can flat iron body wave hair into a straight style or use a curling wand to add curls to straight hair.
However, the original texture is the texture the hair will revert to after washing. This means if you buy deep wave hair and flat iron it straight, it will return to its deep wave pattern the next time you wash it. This is actually a benefit it means you can switch between looks without committing to a permanent change. Learn the proper heat-styling techniques in ourheat-styling guide to protect your hair while switching up your look.
With Xtremely Raw hair, the texture holds up beautifully through repeated heat styling because the cuticles are fully aligned and intact. This hair is designed to endure three or more years of styling, washing, and wear. Xtremely Affordable virgin hair handles heat well for its intended lifespan of up to one year.
