HOW TO TRAVEL WITH YOUR WIG WITHOUT RUINING IT
You have invested time, money, and meticulous care into your wig the last thing you want is to pull a tangled, flattened mess out of your suitcase when you arrive at your destination. Whether you are flying out of Jackson, Mississippi, for a vacation or driving to a family reunion, proper travel preparation ensures your hair arrives looking as good as it did when you packed it.
At Vanity Xtreme Beauty Lounge, our clients travel everywhere with their wigs, and we have refined two reliable packing methods that protect your investment every time.
PRE-TRAVEL PREP
Before you even think about packing, you need to prepare your wig. Start by gently detangling from ends to roots using a wide-tooth comb. If you need a refresher on proper technique, our how to detangle your wig guide walks through every step. Once detangled, lightly mist the hair with a leave-in conditioner to add moisture and reduce static during travel. If you are traveling to a humid destination, apply a small amount of anti-frizz serum as well.
METHOD 1: THE SATIN BAG METHOD
This is the fastest and most space-efficient method, making it ideal for carry-on luggage or short trips.
Flip the wig inside out so the lace and cap are on the outside. This protects the hair strands from friction against the bag.
Loosely fold the wig in halffrom ear to ear. Do not crease it a gentle fold is all you need.
Place it inside a large satin or silk bag. Satin eliminates friction that causes tangling and frizz. Never use a plastic bag, which traps moisture and can create mildew.
Pack the satin bag in the center of your suitcase surrounded by soft items like clothing. This creates a cushion that prevents the wig from being crushed.
This method works best for straight and body-wave textures. If your wig has a defined curl pattern, the wig head method below is a safer choice.
METHOD 2: THE WIG HEAD IN A BOX METHOD
For longer trips, expensive units, or curly and kinky textures that need their shape preserved, this method provides maximum protection.
Place your wig on a foam or canvas wig head and secure it with T-pins at the temples and nape.
Cover the wig with a satin bonnet or a large piece of satin fabric.
Set the wig head inside a sturdy boxa hat box or the original wig box works perfectly. Fill empty space with tissue paper or soft fabric to prevent shifting.
Pack the box in your checked luggage or carry it on. If flying, this can serve as your personal item inside a tote bag.
This method is how we ship wigs to clients across the country from our Jackson, MS location, and units arrive in flawless condition every time.
YOUR TRAVEL KIT ESSENTIALS
In addition to your wig, pack a small travel kit with these items so you can style and maintain your hair on the go:
Wide-tooth combfor gentle detangling
Travel-size leave-in conditionerto refresh moisture daily
Satin bonnet or pillowcaseessential for every night of your trip
Mini flat iron or curling wandfor touch-ups (use with heat protectant)
Edge controlto lay your edges after re-styling
Small spray bottle of waterfor reviving curls
Many of these items overlap with our recommended wig starter kit, so if you already own those essentials, you are halfway packed.
HOW TO STORE YOUR WIG AT YOUR DESTINATION
Once you arrive, immediately take your wig out of the suitcase and either place it on a wig head or hang it in the hotel closet using a satin hanger. Do not leave it folded in the bag for the duration of your trip. If you need more storage tips, our guide on how to store your wigs covers at-home and on-the-go options.
SUMMER TRAVEL CONSIDERATIONS
If you are traveling somewhere hot and humid or even just stepping out into a Jackson, Mississippi summer keep in mind that heat and moisture affect wig adhesive, curl patterns, and frizz levels. Oursummer wig care guide covers humidity-fighting strategies, scalp comfort, and UV protection that are especially important when traveling to tropical destinations.
